Gay Rights in Latin America
The independent Mexican news agency Neike is reporting the Bush administration plans to funnel more than $10 million to Latin American Christian groups to prevent pro-gay rights laws in Latin America.
Former Mexican Congresswoman, Enoé Uranga Muñoz in a Mexican news program said, “The government of George W. Bush is diverting more than $10 million, via Christian churches, so that laws, like that proposed by the Domestic Partnership Societies (Sociedades de Convivencia) are not approved in Latin American countries.”
According to the Congresswoman, the laws proposed by the Domestic Partnership Societies are not disappearing any time soon. On the contrary, every day they continue to gain strength and “the seeds of this movement are nourished by others around the globe.”
Uranga considers the intrusion of public political matters via the churches a grave situation. Using churches to promote his personal agenda against gays, especially via faith-based organizations in Latin American countries, would be “a violation of our sovereignty.”
Uranga Muñoz was invited to discuss the different opinions over the recognition of same sex marriage laws in Mexico and Latin America. Other panelists included a representative of the Bush administration, a representative from the Hispanic-American Pro Life community in the U.S., two gay activists and a psychiatrist.
